Living Rebels

Graffiti started in the 1960s in America being done by popularized by the homeless to leave a mark of themselves on buildings. But in the 1970 the style became more of a art form tagging trains & sub ways. This is when the government started the war on graffiti spending 300 million dollars on removing street art from trains. They then boosted security at stations and made it harder to obtain spray paint.

Graffiti art has been largely connected with hip hop and punk music in the 1970-80s this music had already been criticized as inappropriate by many people and the art was not different but they rebelled against main stream media and the mass population.

Yes graffiti art has become a more mainstream art style but it is still heavy punished by judicial systems around the world making even the most talented artist such as Banksy hide their identity because he is afraid of the legal implications of his art
There are many cases of people even in Australia being locked up because of there street art.
While walking through the city I saw 2 guys working on some graffiti near my home and I realized the amount of time it actually took for them to create a nice piece. I was always under the idea that it was just vandalism and really wasn’t art but watching this guy work on it altered my perception of what it takes to make something look good.

For my photos I used photo shop to make the back grounds of the photos black and white that instinctively draw attention to the art in the picture. I also tried shooting some photos from strange ways as well.

So I took photos of different variety’s of street art from basic and advanced tags to pictures of animals and logos. To show variety of talent and that it is more then just vandalism.
