From ancient Rome to the concrete jungles of modern society nearly every culture has had run ins with Vigilantes. they are in our history from the Black Panthers during the the civil rights movements and ingrained in out culture with characters like batman and robin hood. But with the modern age the vigilantes have evolved. With the large rise of superhero culture as well we see movies such as Captain america Civil War discussing vigilantes bringing about their own justice.
4 Chan is a highly scrutinised website with many other parts of the internet disowning and criticising the website for its high level of anonymity that has caused people to post & say anything they want without hesitation. but one thing this has allowed is GLOBAL vigilantes through collective intelligence this large group of anonymous citizens from opposites sides of the world have caused bombing and criminals to be locked up.
this video by internet historian a you tube with over one million subscribers shows the ultimate power of this group, in such a short amount of time with a tiny amount of information they were able to track down people faster then law enforcement can.
But this begs the question is this ethical. and if you believe it is not why? and how could it be? it is honestly my biggest fears that from one random picture of me i can be tracked down, but you must have a certain amount of ego to believe that they are interested in you if you’ve done nothing. if this large group of people had a face or had some way of taking responsibility would it make it more ethical?
i personally believe that “with great power comes great responsibility” so as long as they are causing positive things or not harming anyone it is beneficial to society. but i want to hear from you so please tweet or comment at me and expand the discussion.
